Olive thinks in words — she collects rare words, writes poetry, creates crossword puzzles, and defines her own “neologisms.” 

Her sister Mattie thinks in pictures — she expresses herself through cartoons and sketches. Despite their deep sibling bond, the sisters struggle after their dad moves away and Olive develops her first crush. As their lives shift and Mattie’s grades slip, their relationship starts to fracture.
