The women who work at Ohio Bell on East Liberty Street aren't supposed to listen in on the calls, but they do, and they all have opinions on what they hear - especially Vivian Dalton. But what Vivian really wants to hear is something scandalous. Something exciting and out of the ordinary.

Then, one cold December night, while she listens in on a call between that snob Betty Miller and someone whose voice she can't quite place, Vivian hears something shocking - news that, if true, will shatter Vivian's own tidy life in Wooster.
