Stella Suberman's father, a Russian orphan, immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. Unlike most Jews who settled in Northern cities, he ultimately decided to seek his fortune in the rural South. Truly a stranger in a strange land, he started a business, and a family in a small Tennessee town that had never seen a Jew. Stella's account takes us into the heart of the town and its people, and into her family's hardships and triumphs, as they made a living and a life.
