The Cartographer of Absences

The Cartographer of Absences follows Diogo Santiago, a celebrated Mozambican poet and intellectual, as he returns to his hometown Beira in 2019 to receive a literary tribute. 

Amidst the looming threat of a devastating cyclone, Diogo confronts layers of personal and collective memory as he revisits his past and the colonial history of Mozambique. When he receives a cache of secret files that reveal his family’s entanglement with racial violence and Portuguese colonial rule, he is forced to reckon with uncomfortable truths about identity, memory, and legacy. The novel blends historical testimony with intimate narrative to explore how individuals and nations navigate the vestiges of colonial trauma.
