Pearls in the Sand: Protecting Sea Turtles in Oaxaca

Papá Grande was once a sea-turtle poacher on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, but now he devotes his nights and days to protecting baby sea turtles and their eggs. 

The book follows the work of the “tortugueros” – community members who guard the nesting beaches, tend hatcheries, monitor predators and human threats, and guide hatchlings to the sea. Through lush illustrations and thoughtful back-matter, it introduces young readers to concepts of conservation, life-cycles of sea turtles, habitat threats and how community action can make a difference.
