I Am the Spirit of Justice

From the first arrival of ships carrying enslaved Africans toward the colonies to the ongoing calls for equality today, the Spirit of Justice has moved through American history, empowering and encouraging freedom fighters, abolitionists, marchers, and allies to make their voices heard and work to bring freedom and equality for all.

Lyrical text from historian Jemar Tisby and Malcolm Newsome personify that spirit for children, demonstrating how it inspired individuals throughout key events in America's past and how that same Spirit motivates us to continue the fight. In addition, an author's note unpacks the importance behind each of Nadia Fisher's illustrations and the notable people and events featured in the art, helping kids better understand how they fit into the history of civil rights and how they too can work to make a difference for their future.
